Valena Ski Lift
CIAO envisioned and designed the innovative Valena chairlift for the Carosello Tonale Ski Resort. Departing from conventional chairlift designs, this project revolutionizes the concept by integrating plant rooms into an architectural shell that harmoniously interacts with the natural surroundings.
"The façade is cladded with bespoke glued laminated timber slats, carved to replicate the profile of the surrounding mountains and establish a direct dialogue with the context."
The decision to replace the aging chairlift at the resort's entrance evolved beyond a simple upgrade; it aimed to establish an iconic landmark, inviting and welcoming to visitors. Given the resort's location within the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, meticulous planning and consultations with the Local Authority and environmental agencies were crucial. The proposed structure encompasses the new base station, housing a control room and linking seamlessly to the existing storage facility. This configuration forms a sheltered boarding area for both skiers and operators. The primary entrance, marked by a prominent gate, caters to skiers, while a side opening serves as a secondary entrance for pedestrians and cyclists in the summer. The façade is formed with custom-glued laminated timber slats, meticulously mirrors the contours of the surrounding mountains, establishing a visual dialogue with the environment. This cladding seamlessly extends to the front of the existing storage facility, guiding skiers toward the main entrance.
"The control room of the top station is wrapped with the bespoke timber cladding and has generous glazed openings to provide a clear view of the incoming passengers while a canopy protects the landing area.”
Anthracite grey aluminum profiles add a sleek finish to openings, safeguarding the cladding and lower walls from snow. Cleverly concealed rainwater goods and utilities contribute to the aesthetic unity. The top station's control room is also enveloped in the bespoke timber cladding, featuring generous glazed openings for a clear view of incoming passengers. A protective canopy shields the landing area, and a lighting system accentuates the façade's form, illuminating the station during night operations. Additional amenities, such as heated seats, energy saving features and an adjustable height belt conveyor, cater to the comfort and accessibility of visitors, especially children, in accessing the boarding area.
